The forum “Biodiversity and the Challenges of Coexistence with Large Carnivores” concluded successfully in Miercurea Ciuc

On 26 November 2025, starting at 11:00 a.m., an interactive professional forum entitled “Biodiversity and the Challenges of Coexistence with Large Carnivores” was held in the Cseke Gábor Hall of the Kájoni János County Library. During the workshop, participants – members of local communities, experts and decision-makers – jointly examined the social, economic and ecological conflicts arising from the presence of brown bears, and formulated sustainable solutions that ensure both public safety and the preservation of biodiversity.

The event took place as a multidisciplinary forum where farmers, hunting and conservation specialists, as well as members of local communities shared their experiences and worked together to find innovative, locally applicable solutions. Thanks to the facilitated process, the perspectives of all stakeholder groups were represented, the discussions were results-oriented, and participants reached consensus on the proposed measures.

The programme consisted of interactive professional sessions during which participants:

* exchanged experiences and provided field-based feedback;

* mapped the main sources of conflicts, such as damages in settlements and agriculture, challenges related to tourism and public safety, and obstacles in institutional cooperation;

* jointly developed preventive tools, rapid response protocols, public information models and structures aimed at improving collaboration.

At the end of the workshop, participants systematised the identified issues, reached consensus on the proposed actions, and defined the next steps toward safe and sustainable coexistence with large carnivores.
