Will the money and the water slip away? Now is the time to act for Ciuc and Harghita County.

This is not about a complicated Brussels program, but about whether there will be funding and concrete plans to protect our villages from floods, drought, peat fires, and damage caused by beavers.

When many people hear “European funding,” they shrug: probably more paperwork, more reports, more official language. But this is not about that. This is about whether Harghita County will secure the EU support needed to finally prepare, in a serious way, the protection of the upper Olt river basin.

Simply put: if we do not submit this application now, we will not only miss out on funding. We will miss out on ready-made plans, the foundation for future investments, our negotiating power in Bucharest, and the chance for Ciuc and Harghita County to decide for themselves how water management should be fixed here.

This opportunity is not important for institutions, but for villages, farmers, cellars, yards, and fields.

What would this bring to Harghita County?

First of all: it would bring money into the county. EU funding that can be used to develop the kind of solid, professional plans without which no major water management or nature-based investment can properly begin later. Without a plan, there is nothing to apply for. Without something to apply for, what remains is complaint and damage control.

Ready plans for real work

These would not be empty promises, but permitted and implementable plans on which ERDF, AFM, or other funding can later be built.

A stronger county position

If Harghita County presents well-prepared, professionally grounded plans to Bucharest and Brussels, it will negotiate not as a petitioner, but as a partner.

Protection for villages

Fewer flooded yards, fewer water-damaged basements, less agricultural loss, and a greater chance to retain water in the landscape during dry periods.

Order in the chaos around beavers

It would be possible to plan where harmful situations must be eliminated and where the natural water-retention role of beavers can be turned to the county’s advantage.

And what do we lose if we do not act now?

Let’s be honest: if we do not submit this application now, other regions will take this opportunity from us. Meanwhile, we will keep facing the same problems again and again: flooded yards, dried-out peatlands, recurring fires, and increasingly frustrated people.

The funding will slip away

Hundreds of thousands of euros in EU funding could go elsewhere, even though we need it just as much in the Ciuc Basin and along the Olt.

Nothing to build on later

Without plans now, there will be no serious investments later. Those who skip planning today will lose implementation tomorrow.

We remain in firefighting mode

Sandbags, pumps, site visits, more complaints. This is not a strategy. It is forced survival.

Others will become the examples, not us

Even though Harghita County could be the region that shows how to protect people, land, and nature at the same time.

Why is this a political issue?

Because the purpose of politics is to make timely decisions where people can no longer solve problems on their own. People in Ciuc do not ask what the name of the funding call is. They ask: will there be a solution for water, or not? Will their land, crops, yards, and basements be preserved, or will they have to suffer the same damage every year?

That is why this is not a technical detail. It is a matter of responsibility. Because if we do not act now, no one can later say there was no opportunity, no time, no warning. There was. There is now.

Today, there is still a window through which we can bring funding, partners, and a future into Harghita County. Tomorrow, there will only be explanations for why we missed out.

Now is the moment to decide which direction we take

I propose that Harghita County should not be a spectator of its own problems, but an initiator of solutions. We should not wait for ready-made answers from others, but bring EU funding here ourselves, organize the partnerships, and prepare the plans that will later turn into real protection.

If we do this now, we are not just submitting an application. We are sending a message: Ciuc and Harghita County do not back down in the face of floods, drought, and damage. They want to work, to plan, and to deliver results.
