Ecological Mountain Roads – A Shared Vision for the Szeklerland

Csaba Borboly, Vice President of Harghita County Council, participated this morning in the first major European conference dedicated to bears, held in the Pyrenees, France. On this occasion, he emphasized the importance of developing mountain infrastructure in a sustainable and nature-friendly way.

“On the way to the conference, I saw that narrow but safe and environmentally friendly roads crossing the mountains work excellently. There is no need for massive investments or moving mountains – courage and good examples are enough to build roads that respect nature,” Borboly stated.

According to him, although Harghita County Council is currently implementing numerous projects, resources remain limited. “In 2028, the new European Union Multiannual Financial Framework will begin, and significant funds will be available then. Additionally, due to UDMR’s participation in the government, from 2028 there will also be government resources dedicated to mountain areas,” he added.

Csaba Borboly stressed the need for early preparation of documentation so that local authorities and mountain communities can benefit from both sources of funding. “We must act now to be ready on time,” he said.

In his vision, these roads not only facilitate access for young people and tourists but also contribute to strengthening community identity. “The mountain roads of the Szeklerland build our shared future – they represent the connection between people, nature, and development,” concluded Csaba Borboly.
