Harghita County Council has treated minority education as a priority over the past years, with special focus on the teaching of the Romanian language as a non-native language and on vocational education.

This is particularly important considering that 85.2% of Harghita County’s population is Hungarian.

Harghita County Council has consistently prioritized the issue of minority education in recent years, with a particular emphasis on the teaching of the Romanian language as a non-native language and the development of vocational education. This strategic focus is especially relevant given that 85.2% of the county’s population is of Hungarian ethnicity.

In line with this commitment, we have continued to implement targeted actions aimed at restoring the prestige of vocational education, aligning training programmes with the evolving needs of the labour market, and reinforcing structured career guidance and orientation services for young people.

In 2017, through the Harghita County Development Agency and in cooperation with sectoral experts, we established a county-level working group dedicated to vocational education. This body has remained active over the past year, participating in relevant consultations and contributing to improving the quality and visibility of vocational training, thereby supporting its societal revalorisation.

Driven by the conviction that the quality of the education system is a key determinant of young people’s future prospects, we have closely monitored and supported the adoption of innovative and high-quality teaching methodologies. We welcome all opportunities for collaboration that aim to enhance the quality of education for young people in the Székely Land region.

A noteworthy initiative in this regard is the online forum series entitled “There Is a Future at Home – Replanning in 10 Steps”, launched as an alternative to the economic forum that could not be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The invited speakers, with their practical expertise, were able to propose realistic and actionable solutions to real-life challenges faced by participants. The main objective of the initiative was to highlight exemplary local entrepreneurial models and thereby encourage young people to remain in the region and develop their entrepreneurial skills and ambitions.
