The Harghita County Council, the Rural Development Association of the Harghita County Council and the Harghita County Development Agency launched a campaign covering Harghita County.
Our goal is to plant 50,000 pine and fruit trees in the county. 25,000 trees are planted under the coordination of the above-mentioned institutions during several local programs. As part of the campaign, Harghita County Council joins the initiative of the European Commission of the Regions, which has the ambitious goal of planting 3 billion trees by 2030. In addition to the Little gardener program, the Rural Development Association contributes with the Little forester program launched last year. The development agency is affiliated with the forestry and environmental vocational schools of Harghita County and with the support of public estates.
As of the remaining 25,000 trees, the residents and non-governmental organizations of the county are expected to join the initiative.
The program was announced by the initiators at the 1st Gardeners’ Day in Csíksomlyó, Harghita county on March 26. The gardening day was opened by the Franciscan monk Csaba Böjte. Following Mass, seven fruit trees were planted by residents and invited guests. This event was followed by a professional lesson, where participants got acquainted with the practice of tree planting, fruit grafting and pruning.
László Csongor, the president of the Rural Development Association, said that last year within the Little forester program nearly two thousand trees were handed over to little students who had to take care of them at home, and this year these trees will be planted. Also more tree seedlings will be distributed before the summer vacation. The aim of the program is to familiarize the young students to the forestry profession from an early age.
As part of the strengthening of vocational education the Harghita County Development Agency, co-operates with the forestry and environmental protection departments of the county. Last year, the Agency also procured two studies that show the public holdings of Harghita County and the forest management of the county between 1990 and 2020.
Csaba Borboly, President of the Harghita County Council, called individuals, associations and public entities to join the initiative and report them by sending photos to info@hargitamegye.ro – We want to build a green county, involving local residents, either within organized actions or as a private person from home, from their own courtyards. In addition to the pine tree, planting fruit trees can help our youngsters to start their small business, the county council president added.
