{"id":2002,"date":"2026-09-23T10:29:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T10:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cor.borbolycsaba.ro\/en\/?p=2002"},"modified":"2026-09-23T10:29:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T10:29:25","slug":"brown-bear-management-requires-regionally-adapted-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cor.borbolycsaba.ro\/en\/brown-bear-management-requires-regionally-adapted-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown bear management requires regionally adapted solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The online workshop was organised by <strong>Csaba Borboly, Member of the European Committee of the Regions and Vice-President of Harghita County Council<\/strong>, and co-hosted by <strong>Barna T\u00e1nczos, Deputy Prime Minister of Romania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event brought together European, national and regional decision-makers, scientific experts and stakeholders to discuss the challenges of brown bear management and coexistence between people and large carnivores across Europe.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Measures must reflect local realities<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the key messages of the discussion was that <strong>there is no single solution that can be applied to brown bear management in every European region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bear population sizes, habitat conditions and the level of human\u2013wildlife conflict vary significantly from one territory to another. Management measures therefore need to take account of local ecological, social and economic circumstances.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Science-based management and effective legal tools are essential<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Participants underlined the importance of <strong>science-based management, reliable monitoring and effective preventive measures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The discussion also addressed the European legal framework, including the <strong>Habitats Directive<\/strong> and the use of derogations under <strong>Article 16<\/strong>. Participants highlighted the importance of legal instruments that can respond effectively to clearly demonstrated local circumstances.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Local communities must be involved<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The role of local and regional authorities, farmers and affected communities was also strongly emphasised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">People living in areas with large brown bear populations should be closely involved in decision-making and should receive appropriate support for prevention measures and compensation for damages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The workshop concluded that successful coexistence requires <strong>flexible and regionally adapted management, supported by scientific evidence, functioning legal tools, meaningful local involvement and stronger cooperation between European regions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Original article:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.face.eu\/2026\/09\/brown-bears-no-one-size-fits-all-approach\/\" data-rich-text-autolink=\"\">https:\/\/www.face.eu\/2026\/09\/brown-bears-no-one-size-fits-all-approach\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brown bear management cannot be based on a single approach applied uniformly across Europe.
