Today I spoke as lead speaker at the joint CULT\u2013LIBE committee hearing of the European Parliament, in my capacity as rapporteur of the Committee of the Regions on the AgoraEU programme. This European Union initiative for the 2028\u20132034 period, with a budget of several billion euros, will define how civil society, fundamental rights, cultural diversity and democratic participation are supported.<\/p>\n
The draft opinion I prepared was adopted unanimously on 2 February 2026 by the SEDEC commission of the Committee of the Regions, with the support of all political groups. At today\u2019s hearing in Brussels, Members of the European Parliament reaffirmed our proposals on several key points, ensuring that the Parliament\u2019s report will reflect the priorities we have consistently advocated.<\/p>\n
Among the most important achievements are the inclusion of the protection of ethnic, national and linguistic minorities in the text of the regulation, the simplification of application procedures for small municipalities and small organisations, the reinstatement of town-twinning programmes, and dedicated support for traditional crafts and living heritage.<\/p>\n
I am convinced that a functioning economy and responsible political decisions cannot exist without a strong civil society. Within the AgoraEU framework, the CERV+ programme must strengthen this democratic infrastructure and ensure that funding reaches local communities as well.<\/p>\n
The final adoption of the opinion in the plenary session of the Committee of the Regions is scheduled for 6\u20137 May 2026. Following this, the position will be formally integrated into the legislative negotiations between the European Parliament and the Council.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
