On 28 October 2025, I checked in from Brussels, from the glass corridor between the European Parliament and the Committee of the Regions \u2013 the very place where the two institutions literally meet. This location perfectly symbolized the essence of my work today: building a bridge between the reality of Harghita County and European decision-making.<\/p>\n
I participated in today\u2019s event organized by the European Committee of the Regions and several EU partner organisations, as a speaker and panel participant, where we discussed the most important issues related to the future of young people, the development of digital skills, and the role of rural regions.<\/p>\n

The Message of the Day: Young People in Rural Areas Must Not Be Left Behind<\/p>\n
I pointed out that Harghita County, the Carpathian Basin, and many countries in the Danube Region face similar challenges.<\/p>\n
The digital transition has accelerated, but opportunities are not equally accessible everywhere. The advantages of large cities are growing rapidly, while young people from small settlements increasingly feel that their chances are limited.<\/p>\n
In my intervention, I highlighted three key areas:<\/p>\n
\n
Young people in rural areas must not be treated as second-tier citizens.<\/p>\n
Education, skills development and career guidance will only be effective if they reach the villages as well.<\/p>\n
\n
Mentoring, learning pathways, local skill centres, language and digital training \u2013 these must be available not only in capitals but in every community.<\/p>\n
\n
Today\u2019s event revisited the mental health crisis among young people in Western Europe, especially in the Netherlands, where society-wide depression and burnout are causing deep concern.<\/p>\n
My message was clear: I do not want young people in Harghita or anywhere in Central and Eastern Europe to end up on this path.<\/p>\n
Strengthening skills development, digital education and the local support system is essential.<\/p>\n
\n
The Danube Region countries must not be pushed into the background<\/p>\n
I also emphasised that the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR), which brings together 14 countries, can only be successful if:<\/p>\n
* the opportunities of young people are balanced,<\/p>\n
* EU programmes reach even the smallest settlements,<\/p>\n
* and rural communities do not fall behind in the digital transition.<\/p>\n
Experts from the OECD and the European Commission confirmed the same:<\/p>\n
Europe is strong only if it lifts up rural regions, not merely supports them occasionally.<\/p>\n
\n
At the SEDEC Committee and with the YES Forum participants, we shared the same conclusions<\/p>\n
At today\u2019s forum \u2013 together with OECD experts and representatives of several European institutions \u2013 we reached the same conclusions:<\/p>\n
* skills development is not a technological issue but a community responsibility,<\/p>\n
* local presence is the foundation of equal opportunity,<\/p>\n
* the future of young people truly begins at home,<\/p>\n
* Europe is strong when it listens to the voice of rural regions.<\/p>\n
\n
Important negotiations have begun: alliances for the future of Harghita County<\/p>\n
After the panel, further consultations took place on the bridge between the Parliament and the Committee of the Regions \u2013 with several actors who may become strategic partners in the coming years.<\/p>\n
These discussions focused on how rural areas, the Danube Region countries and Harghita County can receive stronger support during the 2028\u20132034 EU programming period.<\/p>\n
I will soon report on the details.<\/p>\n

The goal of my work remains the same<\/p>\n
* our children should not have to leave to find opportunities,<\/p>\n
* but opportunities should arrive where they live \u2013 in Harghita County,<\/p>\n
* and young people from rural areas must not be disadvantaged in the digital world, in education, or on the labour market.<\/p>\n
This is what I worked for today in Brussels \u2013 and will continue on Thursday.<\/p>\n
